Clifton 鈥淐atfish鈥 Attaway doesn鈥檛 plan on slowing down any time soon.听The 72-year-old JMer who works in the warehouse of JM鈥檚 plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina, celebrates 50 years with JM on March 18. He says he鈥檚 got plans for when he retires, but he hasn鈥檛 set a date just yet.听
鈥淚t鈥檚 a hard trigger to pull when you鈥檝e been doing something (for) so long,鈥 Catfish said. 鈥淚 am going to walk away someday鈥 I don鈥檛 want to stall, but when you鈥檝e been doing something all your life, it鈥檚 hard.鈥澨
听
Catfish enjoys working in the warehouse, loading trucks and readying shipments for transport ahead of time. He arrives half an hour early, before every shift, just to make sure everything runs smoothly.听
鈥淚f I slow down, they slow down,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 like making things easier for everybody by having things all in one spot,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t makes it easier for me and nobody has to wait.鈥澨

听
Catfish was just 23 when he came to work for JM, where he found a home, lots of friends and benefits the likes of which he鈥檇 never seen.听
鈥淚 worked mostly in construction. When I came to work here, the pay was good, there were good benefits and I never had anything like that in any other job I had,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 thought, 鈥榯his is something new to me,鈥 how they do for you and how they make you feel.鈥
听
While he was amazed by the sheer number of new coworkers he first encountered (he estimates approximately 2,000 at that point) Catfish quickly got to know fellow JMers and settled in at the plant.听
鈥淚t was more or less scary,鈥 Catfish recalled. 鈥淚鈥檇 never been around that many people and I didn鈥檛 know how long I鈥檇 be here.鈥澨
He started working on the production line before adding his name to the bid roster to secure a spot in the warehouse. That鈥檚 where he鈥檚 stayed for 48 years.听
鈥淚n the warehouse, you can move around more,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a real good place.鈥

听
In his half-century at JM has seen some coworkers come and go, while many others, like himself, have put in decades with JM while raising children and becoming grandparents. (Catfish has five grandchildren.)听听
鈥淓verybody here has got some good years in,鈥 Catfish said. 鈥淵ou ask them, and they鈥檒l tell you, they wouldn鈥檛 want to go anywhere else.鈥澨
JM 鈥済ives you all the tools you need鈥 to build a life, raise a family and save for the future, he said, noting he鈥檚 raised three children, while saving for retirement and enjoying special vacations with his wife, Lee.听听
鈥淚t鈥檚 a job you can depend on,鈥 he said.听
听

听
He鈥檚 stuck with JM and JM has stuck with him, Catfish said, holding his job for five months while he battled cancer.
鈥淭he company understands, and that makes you want to work better for them,鈥 he said.听听
A self-described small-town 鈥渃ountry boy,鈥 Catfish grew up 鈥 and still lives on 鈥 the same plot of land where he was born, just 15 minutes away from the JM plant.听
鈥淭he only pressure I have (in life) is getting here every day 鈥 and that鈥檚 no pressure,鈥 he said.听听
Catfish said he wishes everyone in the world could be as happy as he is, with his job, wife and family 鈥 and his three Harley-Davidson motorcycles.听听
鈥淚鈥檝e been riding all my life,鈥 he noted.听
When it does happen, Catfish said retirement will include trips on his Harley trike with Lee, and potentially a return to Alaska, where the couple enjoyed a memorable cruise vacation 鈥 complete with a gold-panning adventure.听Until then, he says he鈥檒l continue enjoying his work at JM every day, proud of the fact he achieved something only a special few have: 50 years of work at one company.听
鈥淚 had to make my 50 years,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a big deal for me.鈥澨
