In a world defined by volatility, shifting tradeÌýflows and availability, as well as economic uncertainty, Â鶹ֱ²¥app Engineered Products continuesÌýto focus on long-term resilience and customer partnership. We sat down withÌýJohn Vasuta, President of Â鶹ֱ²¥app Engineered Products, to discuss theÌýcurrent market environment, how global forces are shaping our industry, and howÌýJM is supporting customers through these complex times.
Ìý
Q: John, how would you describe the current global and regional market environment?
John Vasuta:ÌýI would describe today’s environment in a single word: unprecedented. WeÌýare experiencing a combination of global factors that usually occurÌýregionally orÌýone at a timeÌý- trade wars, regional conflicts, recessionary trends in major economies,Ìýand political instability. But today, they are happening simultaneouslyÌýacross a global economy.Ìý
This creates a level of complexity businesses haveÌýrarely faced before. Europe, in particular, is navigating a challenging mix ofÌýshrinking end markets, high energy costs, and a rapid influx of low‑pricedÌýimports - especially from Asia. At the same time, North America isÌýtransitioning from several years of strong post‑COVID demand to a moreÌýuncertain period marked by slower construction, shipping disruptions, tariff fluctuations, andÌýevolving customer structures.ÌýAcross all regions, we see markets reshaping fasterÌýthan at any point in the last decade.
Ìý
Q: What external forces are having the biggest impact on our industry today?
John Vasuta:ÌýSeveral forces are converging. In Europe, the most visible is the surge ofÌýChinese imports, accelerated by U.S. tariffs that redirected material toÌýthe EU. In automotive, for example, China has grown from a negligible presenceÌýto 20% of the European market, while overall European auto productionÌýhas dropped from around 15–16 million units to roughly 9 million. That shiftÌýaffects OEMs, parts manufacturers, and every supplier in the value chain - includingÌýours.Ìý
We also continue to face structurally high energyÌýprices, especially since the Russia–Ukraine war. Even after the initialÌýspike tapered off, European energy costs remain two to three times aboveÌýhistorical norms, putting glass fiber, chemicals, automotive, and other energy‑intensiveÌýindustries at a disadvantage.
Finally, global logistics disruptions - whetherÌýthe Suez Canal closures, Red Sea tensions, Persian Gulf blockages, or tariff uncertainties - haveÌýmeaningfully reduced as well as redirected available shipping capacity. All of this adds volatilityÌýto demand patterns in construction, automotive, and filtration, the markets weÌýserve every day.
Ìý
Q: Given all these challenges, what matters most to our customers right now - and how is JM responding?
John Vasuta:ÌýMore than ever, customers need reliability, transparency, and partnership.ÌýOur industry is not easy to run - glass fiber furnaces, spunbond lines, shingleÌýplants, compounding lines - none of them turn on a dime. So, when the marketÌýshifts rapidly, being nimble becomes very difficult for everyone.Ìý
That’s why close communication, tight forecasting,Ìýand agility are absolutely essential. We work as closely as possible withÌýcustomers and vendors, sharing information, aligning goals, and adaptingÌýtogether when conditions change. Resiliency is a shared effort and key toÌýall ofÌýour success.
At JM, we focus on what we can control:
- Operational excellenceÌý
- Cost disciplineÌý
- Innovation and new business developmentÌý
- World‑class customer and technical service
And importantly, customers know they can count on usÌýfor the long term. With more than 165 years in business and theÌýstability of Berkshire Hathaway behind us, we are committed to being aÌýreliable partner through cycles - good and bad.
Ìý
Q: What trends in materials and technology are likely to shape the future for our customers?
John Vasuta:ÌýWe are at a crossroads, where sustainability ambitions, regulatoryÌýexpectations, and end‑market dynamics intersect - and the direction isn'tÌýalways clear. Electrification, for example, continues to advance, but the paceÌývaries by region: China is “all in,â€ Europe is strongly committed, and NorthÌýAmerica sees it as one option among many.
Across industries, though, several trends areÌýundeniable:
- Lightweighting - leading to greater use ofÌýplastics and compositesÌý
- Higher performance requirements,Ìýincluding tear resistance, water resistance, mold resistance, and fireÌýperformanceÌý
- Materials efficiency, such as lighterÌýshingles that improve logistics and installationÌý
- Growing demand for filtration solutions, drivenÌýby data centers, AI infrastructure, and clean air initiatives
We work closely with customers to track these shiftsÌýand innovate toward what their markets will require - not just today, but five,Ìýten, and twenty years ahead.
Ìý
Q: What message would you like to share with customers about the road ahead?
John Vasuta:ÌýThe most important message is simple: JM is here for the long haul.Ìý
We remain firmly committed to our business, our customers, and the markets weÌýserve - today and for the future.ÌýWe don’t manage quarter‑to‑quarter. We manage with aÌýlong‑term perspective, built on our values and guided by a consistent mission.ÌýOur goal is to be the partner of choice - trusted, resilient, and ready to growÌýtogether.
Even in difficult times, we focus on what we canÌýcontrol: quality, reliability, innovation, and service. That’s what has kept usÌýstrong for more than 165 years, and that’s what will drive our success for theÌýnext 165.
